crabgrasS prevention sERVICE

What We Did Today

Today we performed your Premier Crabgrass Prevention Service, one of the key visits that keeps your lawn clean through summer. Your technician treated the entire lawn to:

  • Protect against crabgrass and other annual grassy weeds before they appear.

  • Feed the turf so it greens up and thickens coming out of winter.

  • Clean up early-season weeds like dandelion and clover in trouble spots.

This visit is all about setting your lawn up with a strong, healthy base so it can look better and stay cleaner as temperatures warm up.

What Products Were Applied

To do that, we used a combination of professional products and calibrated equipment:

  • A granular spring fertilizer with Prodiamine pre‑emergent to build a soil barrier that stops crabgrass from sprouting while feeding your existing grass.

  • SpeedZone broadleaf weed control, applied only where weeds were present, to knock down dandelion, clover, and similar broadleaf weeds without harming the turf.

  • Our Permagreen ride‑on spreader/sprayer, which:

    • Spreads fertilizer in a 16‑foot swath for even coverage.

    • Uses a low‑drift sprayer that can apply weed control in widths from about 1 foot up to 16 feet, so we can treat open areas efficiently and still be precise along edges and beds.

In recently seeded areas, we dial back or avoid the pre‑emergent so new grass seed isn’t blocked, while still giving the rest of the lawn strong season‑long protection.

How To Care For Your Lawn Now

A few simple steps will help this treatment work its best:

Watering

  • If we don’t receive a decent rainfall within about a week, give the lawn a good, even watering. This helps move the Prodiamine into the top layer of soil, where it forms the barrier that stops crabgrass. Lawn Synergy+1

  • After that, you can go back to your normal watering schedule. There’s no need for extra heavy watering just because of this visit.

Mowing

  • It’s completely okay if your landscaper mows the lawn the next day, as long as the grass is dry.

  • For best results, keep the mower set a bit higher (around 3–3.5"+). Taller grass shades the soil, reduces stress, and helps the lawn out‑compete weeds.

  • Try to avoid scalping or cutting the grass very short, especially along edges.

Disturbing the Soil

  • Avoid heavy raking, dethatching, or digging in treated areas right after this application.

  • Disturbing the soil can break the protective barrier and create little gaps where crabgrass can sneak through.

What To Expect Next

You usually won’t see a dramatic visual change immediately after a crabgrass prevention treatment—that’s normal. Here’s what to look for:

  • The fertilizer will help your lawn green up and thicken as spring progresses.

  • The SpeedZone we used on broadleaf weeds will start working in the first few days; weeds typically curl, darken, or yellow over 7–14 days, depending on the type of weed and weather. PBI-Gordon Turf+2Newsom Seed+2

  • The Prodiamine pre‑emergent is working in the soil, stopping new crabgrass and other annual grassy weeds from establishing as temperatures warm. Golf Course Lawn Store+2Lawn Synergy+2

  • As we move into early summer, you should see far less crabgrass than on untreated lawns, especially in the main body of the yard.

Some crabgrass breakthrough is still possible, especially:

  • Along sidewalks, driveways, and street edges

  • In very thin or damaged spots where soil is exposed

  • In areas where the soil was heavily disturbed after treatment

Your Premier program includes additional weed control and crabgrass clean‑up later in the season to handle any breakthrough that appears.

Fequently Asked Questions about the Premier Spring Seeding

Yes, that’s completely okay. The fertilizer and Prodiamine pre‑emergent are already in the turf and will continue to work, and mowing the next day will not hurt the treatment. We simply recommend your landscaper doesn’t cut the grass too short and avoids aggressive dethatching or deep raking right after the visit.

The crabgrass prevention part is preventive, so you won’t “see” it working. Its job is to stop new crabgrass plants from ever getting started. The broadleaf weed control (SpeedZone) usually shows visible effects within hours, and most treated weeds will curl or fade over 7–14 days

Not into treated soil. Prodiamine prevents all seeds—including grass seed—from germinating in the treated zone. Lawn Synergy+1
That’s why we always plan Spring Seeding before this visit and are careful where we apply pre‑emergent around new seed. For most lawns, any major seeding should wait until fall, when we perform your Fall Seeding service.

Normal rainfall is actually helpful—it helps pull the Prodiamine into the soil so it can form the barrier. Lawn Synergy+1 Very heavy downpours right after treatment are rare but can sometimes move material on steep slopes. If we get extreme weather and you’re concerned, just contact us and we’ll take a look.

As with any lawn treatment, we recommend keeping children and pets off the lawn until the application has dried or been watered in, and following any instructions on your service notification or flag. Once the lawn is dry/settled, normal use can resume.

Yes. Prodiamine and similar pre‑emergent herbicides break down over time, and crabgrass seeds remain in the soil from season to season. Skipping this visit can quickly undo several years of progress, which is why it’s a core part of your Premier program every spring.

Yes, that’s very common with this visit. The fertilizer and crabgrass pre‑emergent are granules that drop into the turf and then into the soil, and the weed control is sprayed as a fine, low‑drift mist. You usually won’t see a dramatic “film” or heavy residue on top of the grass. The results show up over time: weeds we sprayed will start to curl or fade over the next week or two, and the pre‑emergent will be working quietly in the soil to block new crabgrass plants as the weather warms up.

If we know there is new seed in an area, we take that into account. When we did the seeding (or you told us you recently seeded), we either adjust the way we apply pre‑emergent in those zones or use a seed‑friendly pre‑emergent that is labeled for use around new grass. That way, we can still help protect against weeds while allowing your new grass to come in. If you seeded on your own and didn’t mention it, please let us know so we can note it on your account and treat those areas appropriately going forward.
